AI Tags: keywords you check before they are written

AI Tags proposes keywords for your photos with the same on-device AI as AI Search, shows them as cards of photos for you to check, and writes the ones you keep into the files, where other apps can read them. This page follows the three steps on screen: Find, Choose, Write.

What this does to your files

Nothing, until the Write step. Reading your photos and proposing tags changes no file. Writing adds keywords and removes none: inside the file for JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF and DNG, and in a .xmp sidecar for camera RAW files, which are never written. Videos are not tagged.

Undo removes exactly the keywords this run added, from the finished screen or later from Activity. Keywords the photos already had are left alone.

AI Tags sits under Tag & Fix. The steps at the top — Find, Choose, Write — are the order of this page.

Find

Which photosFree

All photos, one folder, New since last review, or Other folder…. The button then reads Find tags in N photos.

Read my photosElite · 500 photos free

Before it can propose a tag, FolioSort has to look at each photo once, on your computer. Read my photos does that for the photos not read yet. It is the same reading AI Search uses, so photos already indexed there are ready. The first time after an update this can take a minute or two. Stopping keeps what was read: tags are proposed for the photos read so far, and they stay read for next time.

Below Elite, up to 500 photos are read.

Choose

The tag cardsFree

One card per tag, showing the photos that would get it, grouped by category. The instruction on screen is the whole job: Untick any tag that's wrong, then write the rest into the files. Click a card to leave that tag out. A photo gets at most 8 tags, from a list of 303 in 12 categories.

On a run of 50 photos or more, a tag that matched only one or two photos starts unticked and marked check it.

Strictness — Strict · Balanced · GenerousFree

Strict proposes fewer, surer tags. Generous proposes more. The cards change at once when you switch.

Never propose

In a card's menu. Stops FolioSort proposing that tag again. Tags already written stay; undo those from Activity.

YOUR OWN TAGS · Add a tag…

Add a word the list does not have. Before anything is saved you see the 12 photos that match it best and a line such as About N photos would get…. If those are not what you meant, try other words, or use Describe it to say what the tag looks like — for example a plate of vegan food in a restaurant. You can keep up to 100 of your own tags. They are written under AI › My tags, and are never started unticked.

Write

Write tags into N photosElite · 20 photos free

Writes the ticked tags as keywords: the standard XMP subject field, plus the same keyword under an AI branch of the keyword hierarchy. A keyword the photo already has is not added again. If the keywords a file already holds cannot be read, that file is not written.

Below Elite, tags are written into 20 photos in total.

Undo · See them in the Library

Undo removes exactly what this run added. See them in the Library opens the photos just tagged.

Seeing the tags in other apps

  • Lightroom Classic reads them. For photos already in a catalog, use Metadata › Read Metadata from Files.
  • Windows Explorer shows them as Tags.
  • Apple Photos reads the keywords inside a JPEG when it imports it. It ignores the .xmp sidecar of a RAW.

Which plan

Finding and reviewing tags is free. Below Elite, up to 500 photos are read and tags are written into 20 photos in total. Elite has neither limit. See the plans.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Are my photos uploaded to tag them?

No. The photos are read by the AI on your own computer, and AI Tags works with no connection. Nothing is uploaded.

Where are the keywords written?

Into the standard keyword fields. JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF and DNG get them inside the file; a camera RAW file gets a .xmp sidecar next to it and is never written. Every AI keyword also sits under one AI branch of the keyword hierarchy, so you can find or remove them all in one step in an app that shows the hierarchy. Videos are not tagged.

Can AI Tags remove or replace the keywords I already have?

No. It only adds. A keyword a photo already has is not written twice, whatever its capitals, and the result line ends with 0 removed. If FolioSort cannot read the keywords a file already has, it does not write that file.

Does it recognise people?

No. AI Tags recognises things and scenes, not who someone is. It writes keywords, not captions or descriptions, and it has no labels that guess at ethnicity, religion, health or sexuality.

What is free in AI Tags?

Finding and reviewing tags is free. Below Elite, up to 500 photos are read by the AI — the same taster as AI Search — and tags can be written into 20 photos in total. Elite reads and writes without those limits. See the pricing page for the plans.
