Archive Health: find a damaged file before you need it

Archive Health records what every file in a folder looks like, then checks the folder against that record later. It tells you which files are intact, changed, damaged, missing or new, and can put a damaged file back from your verified backup. This page explains each check and each verdict.

What this does to your files

Checks only read. Protecting a folder records a fingerprint, the size and the date of every file, and keeps that record in FolioSort's own app data — never inside your folder. Quick check, Deep check and Compare with backup read your files and write nothing to them.

Restore N from the backup is the one action that writes: the damaged file goes to the Trash (Recycle Bin on Windows) first, and the backup's copy takes its place after being checked. Undo the restore reverses it.

Archive Health sits under Protect, next to Backup Copy. Each protected folder carries a green, amber or red mark, and reads Not checked yet until its first check.

Archive Health

Protect a folder…Pro · first 100 files free

Records every file in the folder as it is today: a fingerprint of its content, its size and its date. Everything later is compared with this record.

Quick check

Looks at sizes and dates only — seconds, even for a big library. It finds files that were edited, removed or added. It cannot find silent damage, because a damaged file keeps its size and date.

Deep check

Reads every byte — this is what finds silent damage (bit rot).

The verdicts

Everything is intact.

Every file matches its record.

Changed

Edited since they were recorded (size or date changed). Usually you, in an editor. If so, Accept these edits records the files as they are now.

Damaged (bit rot)

The content changed while the size and date did not. Only a Deep check shows this. If you did change the file with a tool that keeps the date, This was an intentional edit records it as it is. Otherwise restore it from the backup.

Missing

No longer in the folder. If you removed them yourself, I deleted these on purpose takes them off the record. Your backup keeps its copies either way.

New

Added since they were recorded. Protect these too adds them to the record.

Could not be read

The drive refused to read these. Try again; if it persists the drive may be failing.

The backup

Compare with backup

Reads every file on the backup against the same fingerprints. A backup file that differs or is missing is copied again and verified. Extra files on the backup are kept and never offered for deletion. When all is well it reads The backup matches the original.

Restore N from the backup · Undo the restore

Damaged files go to the Trash first; the backup copy is checked against the original before it comes back. If the backup's copy differs from the record too, the restore is refused rather than replacing one bad file with another. The copy is verified again once it is in place. Undo the restore sends the restored copies to the Trash and brings the damaged files back.

Elite

Check every monthElite

Runs a Deep check once a month, when FolioSort is open and the drive is connected; if the drive is away, it waits for it. You are alerted only when a file is damaged or missing. There is no background service — nothing runs while FolioSort is closed.

Save health report…Elite

Saves an HTML page with the folder, the number of files and copies, the date and kind of the last check, the count for each verdict, when the backup was last verified, and the files that need attention.

Which plan

Free covers the first 100 files of each folder. Pro covers every file. Elite adds the monthly check and the health report. See the plans.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is bit rot, and how does FolioSort find it?

Bit rot is a file whose content changed on the drive while its size and date stayed the same, so nothing looks wrong until you open it. A Quick check looks at sizes and dates only and would pass it. A Deep check reads every byte and compares it with the fingerprint recorded when you protected the folder — this is what finds silent damage.

Does a check change my files?

No. Quick check, Deep check and Compare with backup only read. The only thing that writes is Restore from the backup, which you start yourself, and it can be undone.

How does a damaged file get repaired?

From your Backup Copy. The backup's copy is checked against the original record first, and the restore is refused if the backup differs too. The damaged file goes to the Trash (Recycle Bin on Windows), the good copy is brought back and verified on arrival, and Undo the restore puts things as they were.
