Help · Labs
Labs holds small tools people asked for. They work, but they are new, and each is marked BETA. Every card says what it does to your disk before you open it. This page covers the six, one section each.
Originals are never changed. Each card carries its own line: Writes new copies · originals untouched (Resize & Shrink, Bulk Crop), Writes one new file (Combine Photos), Reads only · saves a list (Moved Files Map), Moves to Trash only after review (Reminder Photos), Reads only · changes nothing (Ask Your AI).
Every lab shows a preview before anything is written, and every run can be undone from Activity: the copies it made go to the Trash (Recycle Bin on Windows).
Labs is the last row of the sidebar, marked BETA. Each card has a Useful? thumbs-up and thumbs-down, and Suggest a lab sends an idea from inside the app. A lab has a handful of options and no settings page. One that grows up moves to its own place in FolioSort, and its card says where it went for one release.
Longest side · quality or target sizePro · 100 per run free
Makes smaller copies. Set the longest side in pixels — proportions are kept and a photo is never made larger — and either a quality or a target size in KB or MB, in which case FolioSort uses the highest quality that fits. The first five photos are shown as they are now next to the copy, with how much smaller it is.
The date, place and camera information is kept in the copies. They go to a Resized
folder next to the originals, or to a folder you choose. Without Pro, the button says
Save 100 of N before you start.
One crop for every photo of the same sizePro · 100 per run free
For a set of screenshots or scans that all need the same edge removed. Photos are grouped by their size in pixels. Draw the crop once on one photo, check it on the others, and it is applied to every photo of that size. Photos of another size are skipped and listed.
Keep date, place and camera info is on. The copies go to a Cropped folder next
to the originals, or to a folder you choose.
The five layoutsPro · first 100 photos free
Choose the size and the order: By name, Oldest first or Newest first. The
image layouts take up to 300 photos; the PDFs take up to 2,000, each photo kept at full quality. The
result is one new file in a Combined folder. Without Pro, one image or PDF takes the
first 100 photos.
The five groupsElite · 100 per run free
Finds the photos you took to remember something rather than to keep. It reads what AI Search already found in your indexed photos — no new analysis — and groups the likely ones:
If your photos are not indexed yet, the lab says so and offers Open AI Search. On the Mac, photos with people in them are left out.
Strict · Balanced · Generous — Move N to Trash
How sure FolioSort should be before it lists a photo. Review the list, untick any photo you want to keep, and only then press Move N to Trash. Undo puts them back where they were.
Last 24 hours · Last 30 days · Everything in the logFree
For when FolioSort moved your files and a catalog — Lightroom, for example — now shows them as missing. The lab reads FolioSort's own activity log and lists where every moved file went. You can narrow it to the files that came from one folder. Copies are left out unless you ask for them: A copy never breaks a catalog.
Save CSV… · Copy folder list
The CSV has one row per file: old_path, new_path, action, date, still_there. Nothing in
your library is changed by this lab.
Lets an AI assistant you already use answer questions about your library — How many photos did I take in 2019? — through FolioSort.
Let AI assistants on this Mac / this PC search my FolioSort libraryFree
The switch. It takes effect straight away, with no need to restart FolioSort. Read-only: an assistant can search and read details, never move, rename, change or delete a file. FolioSort answers from the index it already keeps on your computer, so the assistant receives the answer in words. What it never receives: the images themselves.
Connect to Claude Desktop · Remove from Claude Desktop
Adds FolioSort to Claude Desktop's settings. Quit Claude Desktop first (⌘Q on the Mac; on Windows, File → Exit, or Quit from its tray icon): while it is open it rewrites its own settings and drops FolioSort, so the button turns on once it has quit. Then open Claude Desktop and look in Settings → Developer → Local MCP servers: foliosort should be listed and say Running. Remove from Claude Desktop takes only FolioSort's entry out.
Test it
The lab gives you a question to paste into a new chat. Claude asks to use FolioSort the first time — choose Allow — and should answer with your library's real numbers.
Other apps — Copy setup (JSON) · Copy setup (Codex)
Copy setup (JSON) is for Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code and most apps that run local MCP
servers; Copy setup (Codex) is for ~/.codex/config.toml, used by Codex CLI and
the ChatGPT desktop app's Codex. Regular ChatGPT chats only connect to servers on the internet, so
they cannot reach FolioSort on your computer.
Which plan
Moved Files Map and Ask Your AI are free. Resize & Shrink, Bulk Crop and Combine Photos are Pro; without Pro a run does 100. Reminder Photos is Elite; without Elite a run moves 100 photos to the Trash. See the plans.
FAQ
No. Resize & Shrink and Bulk Crop write new copies, Combine Photos writes one new file, Moved Files Map only reads and saves a list, and Ask Your AI reads and keeps nothing. Reminder Photos is the only one that moves anything, and only to the Trash, after you have reviewed the list — Undo puts the photos back.
Into a folder next to your originals: Resized, Cropped or Combined. Resize & Shrink and Bulk Crop also let you choose another folder.
From Activity. The copies a run made go to the Trash; your originals were never changed. For Reminder Photos, Undo puts the photos back where they were.
