Lightroom Classic vs FolioSort

A Lightroom Classic Alternative for Your Photo Library, Without a Subscription

FolioSort manages a photo library on Mac and Windows over the folders you already have — timeline, map, people, on-device AI search, keywords and ratings — with no catalog to import into or re-link when a drive moves, for €19.99 or €29.99 once. Lightroom Classic stays the industry standard for developing RAW, and it reads the keywords, places, dates and ratings FolioSort writes.

Lightroom Classic — for developing RAW

Lightroom Classic is the industry standard for RAW development: the right second app for editing, if you want one. It is sold only by subscription, and it keeps its own catalog of imported photos. If you do not develop RAW files, you do not need it to manage a library.

On Linux, or if you want a free, open-source catalog, look at digiKam — see FolioSort vs digiKam.

FolioSort vs Lightroom Classic for Managing a Library

Lightroom Classic is built around developing RAW. For keeping the library, you do not need its catalog or its subscription.

The Library Side, Without the Catalog

Everything FolioSort learns is written into your files or kept in folders any app can open

1

Browse It Without Importing It

The Library shows every drive you add as a timeline (Years · Months · Days), a map, people, events and places, and opens on "On this day". Each drive gets a colour; an unplugged one stays as greyed tiles. Browsing is free and unlimited on every tier; People with faces is Elite.

2

Find Any Photo, on the Device

Describe a photo in plain words or search the text inside it, and see faces grouped into People. AI search runs on Apple Vision and Core ML on macOS and local ONNX models on Windows, with Wi-Fi off, and answers in 62 ms at 100,000 photos. Elite; a 500-photo taster is free.

3

Tag It Where Lightroom Reads It

AI Tags proposes keywords from a 303-tag vocabulary for you to review; Places writes city, state and country from GPS; Dates fills, shifts or sets capture dates; Review writes star and colour ratings. All of it goes into XMP and IPTC, or an .xmp sidecar for RAW. In Lightroom: Metadata › Read Metadata from Files.

4

Clean It and Protect It

Duplicates finds exact and visually similar copies and sends removals to the Trash or Recycle Bin, undoably. Backup Copy mirrors the library to another drive and re-reads every copy to check its hash; Archive Health flags files that corrupted silently and restores them from the backup.

5

Mac and Windows, Paid Once

Pro is €19.99 for 1 computer; Elite is €29.99 for 3 devices across Mac and Windows. No subscription and no account. FolioSort 5 is a free update for everyone who bought Pro or Elite, with a 14-day refund and no conditions. Lightroom Classic is subscription only, from $11.99 a month on an annual plan.

6

Keep Lightroom for Developing RAW

Lightroom Classic is the industry standard for RAW development — the right second app for editing, if you want one. FolioSort never writes to a RAW file (it uses .xmp sidecars) and never changes the pixels of an original, so both apps can work on the same folders.

FolioSort vs Lightroom Classic: Questions

Managing a library without Lightroom's catalog or subscription

Is there a Lightroom Classic alternative for organizing a photo library without a subscription?
Yes: FolioSort. It covers the library side of Lightroom Classic — browsing by timeline, map, people and events, AI search and face recognition on the device, keywords, star and colour ratings, place names, dates, duplicates and verified backups — over the folders you already have, on Mac and Windows. There is no import catalog to maintain and nothing to re-link when a drive moves. It costs €19.99 (Pro) or €29.99 (Elite), once. Keep Lightroom Classic only if you develop RAW files; it reads what FolioSort writes.
Does FolioSort replace Lightroom Classic?
For managing the library, yes. For developing RAW files, no: FolioSort is not an editor and never changes the pixels of an original. Lightroom Classic is the industry standard for RAW development and the right second app for editing, if you want one. Everything FolioSort writes goes into standard XMP and IPTC fields, so the two apps work on the same files.
Will Lightroom Classic see the keywords, places, dates and ratings FolioSort writes?
Yes. AI Tags writes keywords into XMP dc:subject, Lightroom's hierarchical keywords (AI|Nature|Beach) and IPTC Keywords; Places writes city, state and country into IPTC and Photoshop XMP; Dates writes the capture date into EXIF and XMP; Review writes star and colour ratings into XMP. JPEG, HEIC, TIFF and DNG files get them inside the file; proprietary RAW files get an .xmp sidecar and are never written. For photos already in a catalog, select them in Lightroom and choose Metadata › Read Metadata from Files.
What happens to my library when a drive moves or is unplugged?
In Lightroom Classic, photos on a moved drive show as missing until you re-link them in the catalog. FolioSort shows your folders where they are; it does not import them. Its index is a disposable file in the app's support folder, rebuilt from the folders if deleted. An unplugged drive stays in the Library as greyed tiles from cached thumbnails, and comes back without a rebuild when you connect it again.
Can I use FolioSort on folders that are already in a Lightroom catalog?
Yes. The Library, AI search, AI Tags, Places, Dates and Review read your folders and write metadata into the files; they do not move anything, so the catalog still finds every photo. Tools that move or remove files, such as the Organizer in move mode or Duplicates, change what Lightroom points at, and Lightroom will show those photos as missing until re-linked. Moved Files Map, in Labs, lists where every moved file went as a CSV.
How much does FolioSort cost compared with Lightroom Classic?
Lightroom Classic is sold only by subscription: $11.99 a month with the Lightroom (1TB) plan or $19.99 a month with Photography (1TB), on an annual plan. FolioSort is paid once: Pro €19.99 for 1 computer, Elite €29.99 for 3 devices across Mac and Windows. Browsing the Library is free and unlimited on every tier. Places, Dates, Duplicates and Backup Copy are Pro; AI search across the whole library, People with faces, AI Tags and Review are Elite, and most can be tried free first. FolioSort 5 is a free update for everyone who bought Pro or Elite, and there is a 14-day refund with no conditions.
Does FolioSort upload my photos or need an account?
No. There is no account and no sign-up. AI search, face recognition and AI Tags run on the computer — Apple Vision and Core ML on the Neural Engine on macOS, local ONNX models on Windows — and keep working with Wi-Fi off. The only network calls are GPS coordinates when you ask for place names, map tiles while the Library map is open, the update check, licence activation once, and anonymous usage events. No photo, face, file name or path ever leaves the computer.
